2016, a good year for fruit and vegetables exporters

During 2016, the exports of fruit and vegetables obtained a very positive balance, better than the data from the previous year. In spite of the difficulties with which 2016 started, in terms of export volume, 2015 left a good impression for fruits and vegetables exporters in Spain.

Until October of 2016, exports had grown 4.5%, which translates into 9.906 million euros. FEPEX (Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables) estimated that the data for the whole year was 12.3 billion euros. There is still not a final amount for 2016.

The diversification of the markets is being one of the main keys of the sector, especially because of the large number of international clients that Fruit Attraction attracts, according to José María Pozancos, director of the federation. The national event achieved a 17% increase in the number of international participants from 102 countries.

Prospects for 2017

This year we must diversify the sales of fruit and vegetables abroad, invest more in innovation and improve crisis management measures, Fepex explains.

On the one hand, phytosanitary barriers must be removed in many countries so that the Spanish market can expand, as well as reinforce funds and programs to finance investments in innovation. Lastly, they also pointed out that the Commission Regulation 543/2011 must be amended to include the new withdrawal prices in order to contribute to price sustainability and to address possible negative effects.
